Tips For Professional Headshots For Women

Tips For Professional Headshots For Women

Introduction

Once you know you need new photos, the professional headshot and portrait preparation process can easily feel overwhelming at first.  So here are some of the tips I've learned after photographing thousands of people to make it easier with my tips for women to look and feel their absolute best.

As an English speaking photographer in Madrid, I'm lucky to have clients from all around the world and I have the change to meet and photograph so many people from different backgrounds and cultures.  I've photographed people from more than 40 different countries!

Here are some of my top tips to help ensure your professional headshot experience is smooth and enjoyable.

The most asked question I get asked  is “What should we wear for our headshot photos?”

Here's  a list of recommendations to help make the best outfit decisions. Let’s look at what outfit styles will look flattering in photographs versus the ones that should be avoided.

Who Are You Speaking To?  What Do You Want To Say?

Before stepping in front of the camera for your photo session, it’s crucial to consider who will be viewing your headshots and what impression you want to leave on them.  It may sound like overkill, but using your phtots to accomplish your goals is powerful tool!

Think about the type of people you aim to attract and the message you wish to convey. This is easier if you have a personal brand or you have a very defined job or role.  But sometimes, I have clients that haven't considered this before.  So it's a good time to reflect on this and I we will discuss it during our pre-shoot call.  Here is the one question I ask all of my clients before we step in front of the camera.

By knowing and discussing who you are, and what we want your photos to say, will guide the tone, style, and overall direction of our headshot session together

For example, if you're a lawyer, what type of lawyer are you and what is your professional persona?  Are you the tough Litigator people dread seeing in a courtroom, are you an affable and fair arbitrator, or are you professional and dependable internal counsel?

There are a range of options and sometimes you need more than one persona for different needs.  A Litigator needs to look sharp and a little intimidating(or the opposite - being underestimated); the others needs to be more measured, trustworthy and smart.  We talk about the right mix for you.

Starting with what you want to say ensures that your headshots support your professional goals and resonate with the right people.

In all of my session we will explore multiple looks to include a more formal, semi formal and relaxed looks for your headshots so you can see in real time how different they can look and feel sand we will decide to gather with ones are right for you.

What should I wear for my headshot session?

WARDROBE & CLOTHING FOR PHOTOS vs REAL LIFE

Golden Rule (TL;DR):

What you feel good in, always looks better than what you think you should wear.  Don't feel pressured to play dress up and treat your headshot as a fashion experiment. That's an easy way to derail your headshots and your uncomfortability will show in the photos.  Think about being the best version of yourself, not trying to be the most fashionable you can be.  If you purchase new items for your photoshoot, purchase items that you will wear professionally.

In every photo session I can easily tell which clothing feels like you, because I can immediately see it on camera!

  • Start With Solid Colors- Patterns and "busy" clothes look great when you want to look fabulous and chic sitting at brunch, but they can grab attention away from your face. For professional headshots, the person viewing the headshot needs to be drawn into the face and not get distracted by outfit choices, so solid colors in jewel tones and rich neutrals usually create a cleaner, more professional look.  We're not saying boring, you can still have your personality but we want to keep the focus on your face.

  • Fit Is Key - Choose Well-Fitted & Tailored Clothes - Clothes that fit loosely will often make you look larger. Properly tailored tops will look flattering and professional. Avoid any tops that sit too slouchy.  Think angles that go in.  A beautiful flowy sleeve looks great when you're walking down the street, but when cropped can make you look bigger and rounder at the shoulder, where we want to draw the eye in and down!  Same with a blazer that is too small in the chest.  We want V shapes whenever possible.  **We want clothing that fits and cinches at shoulders, wrists and waists.

  • How Low Should You GO? Avoid Low Cut Tops* - My male clients will never know the added complexity of what we discuss for female headshots!  When photographing headshots, we photograph halfway into the chest area. If you decide to wear a low-cut top, it could take the attention away from the most important part of the headshot: your face.   That being said, this is very personality based and the right neckline can balance feminine with professional. We will talk about this together, but generally we want to keep as much attention on your face whenever possible.

  • Long Sleeves are Flattering - Short sleeves like to misbehave and can sit funky on the arms unless properly steamed or ironed. Short sleeve shows skin at the edge of a headshot, which may distract from your face.

  • Put Proper Undergarments with your Outfit - Bra straps showing in your headshot is very unprofessional. Make sure the straps are properly tucked away and hidden and the best color choice for your clothing.

  • Avoid See-Through Tops - When looking through your clothes, make sure to try the tops on. That shouldn't be your top selection if you can see your undergarments through the shirt. If you decide to stick with a see-through top, make sure to bring a blazer or your favorite top for layering.

  • Vibrant Colors Stand Out - But Know Your Colors! - Depending on your profession, wearing vibrant colors will make your headshot stand out.  It's really helpful if you have worked with a stylist and you know the shades that complement your skin tone and professional image.  If you don't know your best colors, I can connect you with a recommended stylist!

  • When In Doubt Darker Tops Can be Timeless - If you decide to stick with darker colors, besides black, navy blue is a particularly flattering, timeless option in photos.  The one caveat is for women with dark hair and eyebrows and/or darker skin.  There needs to be some balance and contrast.  So, if you have darker hair and eyebrows, a lighter color may be better OR we need to balance with a lighter accent color or more open garments so that it doesn't feel too closed and dark.

  • Avoid Tops that Blend with Hair / Skin Color - Darker clothes blend too much with dark hair. If you have pale skin, avoid tops that blend with your skin unless you plan to layer. Otherwise, it looks too washed out. Avoid pastel colors too, since they can blend into light backgrounds and flatten your look.

  • Large Jewelry or Personal Items Can Be Distracting - Jewelry draws attention away from the face, but you can wear jewelry if it is minimal, simple, and timeless so it does not distract from your face. We do not recommend any larger pieces for your headshot.  As a general rule we leave it out, unless it's a personal piece that you we are all the time and it woudl not look like you without it.

HAIRSTYLES FOR PROFESSIONAL HEADSHOTS

How Should I Style My Hair?

Your hair should be the most polished version while feeling familiar and aligning with what how you typically wear it so that you feel confident on camera.

I highly recommend adding the hair styling and makeup services that I offer in my studio. Effective headshot preparation also includes wardrobe selection, hair and makeup planning, and practicing expressions before the session.

My makeup artist and hair stylist will come directly to the studio and make sure you look the best for your headshots. Working with a hair stylist that works with me on a regular basis will make sure that your hair not only looks good in person but also in photos.

Your hairstyle should reflect your everyday look. Over the years of photographing headshots, here are my best hair tips for women’s headshots:

  • Fly Aways and Unruly Hair - Most flying hair can be addressed with hair spray. I have hair spray in the studio. Do not worry if you have staticky or too many fly-aways, they can be retouched through my professional retouch.

  • Haircut and Hair Color Timing - If you get your hair cut or colored, make sure to schedule your appointment about one week before the session. This is when the hair looks the best and natural while giving you time to work on the styling that you like.

  • Natural Looks Better - Whether you style your hair yourself or work with a professional, we do not recommend trying a new hairstyle on the day of your session. You want to be the best version of yourself, but your style should still look like you in real life so people are not surprised when they meet you in person after seeing your headshot.  ***This is the number one reason people don't like thier headshots.  They try a new hairstyle that feels fine in the moment, but in the end it doesn't look like them.  Keep it simple!

  • Should You Wear Your Hair Up? - Again, the more natural the better.  If this is a look that you like and people woudl see it looks like something you would wear, let's try it!  Tying up your hair can slim down your face and your neck. This also opens your face more for your headshot to stand out.  If you have dark hair, eyebrows, skin tone and wearing darker clothing, this is a way for us to balance the photos to show your face.

  • Should You Curl Your Hair? - Some curling is good but let's not go too crazy with the curls. Remember, it's important to make sure the headshot looks like you!

  • Get A Blowout - If you do a blowout schedule it the same day as your session. Please note: I do not offer blowouts in our studio

  • No Blowout?  Clean You Hair The Day Before - If you don't do a blowout, wash your hair the day before. Avoid frizz by either applying hair products yourself or with our hair stylist before the session.

MAKEUP FOR HEADSHOTS & PORTRAITS

TL;DR - I highly recommend my professional makeup artist.  The details matter and knowing how to do makeup for the camera is nuanced.

Make-up can make it or break it for your women’s professional headshots look. If you wear makeup for headshots, the goal should be enhancement rather than a heavy or glamorous look, since thoughtful makeup and grooming choices help create the best headshot. Overall, we recommend not over-doing it and going more for a natural look. As we mentioned before and in our other articles, it’s important to look like the best version of yourself.

Quick Tips For Headshot and Portrait Makeup

  • Nobody’s skin is perfect. Perfection isn't the goal.
  • Make-up is supposed to enhance your features and conceal some imperfections.
  • Keeping makeup light also helps the headshot stay natural on camera and reflect your everyday look.
  • After you’ve made your headshot selection, additional skin and beauty enhancements can be done but it the most natural way.
  • Avoid overly shiny formulas and choose a matte finish under studio lighting.
  • Don’t add shimmer, since shimmer products reflect light poorly.
  • Bring a small touch-up kit with basics like powder, lip color, and a comb to maintain your appearance during the session.

The Best Makeup Options for Headshots

  • Hire a Professional Makeup Artist - Even if you are really good with your own make up, hiring a professional that knows what looks the best in camera makes a big difference.

  • Natural & Comfortable Feel - Makeup should feel natural for you, especially when you look at yourself in the mirror. We tend to lean toward more natural look and feel but it's up to you what you feel comfortable with. You don't want your make up to be a distraction but to enhance your features and conceal minor blemishes without looking heavy. We recommend choosing colors closer to your natural complexion, so minor blemishes can be softened while still keeping the look natural.

  • Avoid Highlighters - Highlighting and contouring is an art of its own. We do not recommend highlighting your facial features because if not applied properly, it could make your face shiny.  I will do a lot of the work by shipping the light and moving your face and camera to get the best angels that highlight your features!

  • Makeup Before your Session - If you added makeup to your session in our studio, please do not apply any products including sunscreen on your face the day of your headshot. Apply only oil-free moisturizer and an eye cream prior to your session.

  • Easy on the powder/foundation - Our cameras are extremely high resolution. We could zoom in and see every detail of your skin and pores. Too much powder and foundation looks unflattering in headshots. Let us do the proper retouching needed.

Let's Talk General Skin & Beauty Techniques

Taking care of your skin is good life advice in general :)

When it comes to preparing for a headshot photo shoot, taking care of your skin is extremely helpful to get the best look in front of the camera.

Skincare during the week of your headshot is especially important! Since a headshot is all about the face it’s important to get rest, take care of your skin and stay hydrated leading up to your headshot appointment! It helps preparing mentally too.  Arriving organized and relaxed helps you look more confident on camera.

How do you care for your skin and face the week of the photoshoot?

  • Stay hydrated - Drink plenty we mean PLENTY of water the week of your headshot. Skin keeps our body and skin happy and hydrated.

  • Light Exercise - Helps keep you skin vibrant, your mind focused and it will help you feel more confident during the session.

  • Wax a few days before - If you need to wax any hair on your face including your eyebrows, try to make an appointment the week before your headshot. Skin can be very sensitive and can stay red in the waxed areas for a few days. AVOID waxing the day before or the day of your headshot.

  • Treat yourself to a facial - We all love and deserve to be pampered. What better way to treat yourself than to a facial to make sure your skin is beautiful and perfect. If you decide to get a facial, please make sure to get it the week before your headshot. You never know how your skin will react to products and it needs a few days to fully recover.

  • Exfoliate - Just like getting a facial, exfoliation should be done at least a few days before your headshot to avoid redness of the skin.

  • Moisturize - We are confident that you have your beauty routine down and know what you are doing. This is just a friendly reminder to love your skin extra the week of your headshot and use lots of moisturizer. You can even look into a moisturizer mask.  don't experiment with it right before your photoshoot.  Try it at least one time a few weeks before to avoid braking out or skin changes. * Pro Tip: dont forget your lips!  Dry, cracked, flaky lips take away from your best!

  • Rest - This may be the hardest one, especially if you travel a lot or have kids!  You want to look rested, confident and energized in your headshot. Try to go to bed earlier the day before your headshot to make sure you at least get your 8 hours of sleep the 3-4 days before your session.
